Obit - WFIW Radio Robert H. Smith, 93, of Rinard died on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at his home. He was a member of Blue Point Free Will Baptist Church near Cisne and a member of the American Legion. He served in the Navy in World War II as a Seaman First Class. He survived the sinking of the USS Southern Seas during Typhoon Louise, which hit the coast of Okinawa in 1945. He also served on the USS Nashville. He was a life-long farmer and worked at the McCracken farm near Mt. Erie, the Robinson Farms at Mt. Erie and Enterprise, and for his brother Isaac Smith near Rinard.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years; his son, Rex Smith; his daughter, Peggy Dickey (Elbert); granddaughters Michele Crawford, Julie Myskow (Jason), and Lisa Giesbrecht (Daniel); grandson Matthew Dickey (Amanda); and several nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Taylor and Holden Crawford, Wyatt Myskow, Toby and Liam Giesbrecht, and Holly and Owen Dickey. Robert also enjoyed a close friendship with Merl and Marilyn Holt. He thought of the Holts as family and considered Kara Garner and children Holt and Taegen and Tyra Cycholl and children Savannah and Owen to be his grandchildren.
