Henry Ford Carmack, Lt. Colonel, USMCR (Ret.) passed away, Tuesday, December 5, 2006. He was born in Bristol, Virginia on October 5, 1917. He graduated magna cum laude from King College, Bristol, Tennessee and soon thereafter entered the Marine Corps at the onset of World War II. He served with the Fourth Marine Division at Roi and Namur, Kwajaleiu Atoll, the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He received a Letter of Commendation for outstanding devotion to duty during the invasion and capture of Saipan and Tinian Islands. The Fourth Marine Division received two Presidential Citations and one Secretary of the Navy citation for service in the Pacific. Mr. Carmack was Executive Officer of the 16th Engineer Co., USMCR (Ret.), Roanoke, Virginia and was called back to active duty during the Korean War. Following the war, Mr. Carmack worked for Greyhound Lines, Inc. for 42 years and served in the Marine Corps Reserves for 23 years. He served the Roanoke community in a variety of areas as a volunteer at the Bradley Free Clinic, President of The Retired Officers Association, as a member of the Roanoke Businessmen's Club, the Fincastle Resolution Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Order of the Elks, the Masons, and St. Marks Lutheran Church. He is predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Lillie Carmack, a brother, Shelburn Carmack, and sisters, Juanita Carmack Howison and Estelle Carmack. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jacquelyn Tompkins Carmack; his children, Mrs. John Talbott (Connie) of Bozeman, Montana, Mrs. W. Stebbins Hubard, Jr. (Bunny) of Roanoke, Virginia, Mrs. Stephens Mundy (Leigh) of Plattsburg, New York, Dr. John F. Carmack and wife Nan of Forest, Virginia, and Mrs. Robert Baldwin (Sue) of Richmond, Virginia; his grandchildren, Greg and Erin Gendron, Beth, Anne Wilcox and John Hubard, Alexander and Robert Mundy, Ford and Will Carmack, Brent Baldwin, Stephanie Baldwin Herndon, Sarah Talbott Hunter, and Shannon Talbott Reiff; and his great-grandchildren, Blake, Claire and Kate Gendron, Grayson Herndon, Aiden Reiff and Marin Hunter.
