Myrtle Mary Hiles, a resident of Bend for the past six years, died Tuesday at a Bend nursing home at the age of 89.
She was the last surviving member of a California pioneer family.
The Rev Flavian Welstead will celebrate a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Monday at St Francis of Assist Catholic Church. Private interment will be a St. Joseph Cemetery in Roseburg.
Mrs Hiles was born at Mugginsville, California on Nov 20, 1896, to parents Edward and Gertrude (Chapin) Dayton.
She was a member of All Souls Catholic Church and Altar Society in Myrtle Creek and the American Legion Auxiliary of Canyonville. She was also a member of the Douglas County Historical Soiety and the Siskiyou County (Calif.) Historical Society. She had been an avid rockhound and gardener.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene J Gallagher, in 1949. She later married Horace W Hiles, who preceded her in death in 1965.
Survivors include three daughters, Frances G Dash, San Leandro, Calif, Katherine M Smykol, Erie Penn, and Janet R Knapp, Bend; two sons, LeRoy Gallagher, Pullman, Wash. and Eugene J Gallagher, Roseburg; 31 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Edward C Gallagher, M.D., in 1966, and Kenneth J Gallagher, D.V.M., in 1973; and one daughter Patricia E Metzler in 1961.
