Judge Alan Dail Markum was born to Charles and Velma Marie (Harris) Markum on November 9, 1943 in Clinton, Oklahoma and died on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at Integris Clinton Regional Hospital having reached the age of 58 years, 22 days.
Alan was raised in Clinton, where he graduated from high school in 1962. In 1966 Alan received a B.A. from Southwestern State University in Weatherford, and spent the next year in the National Guard Reserve. In 1970 he completed his Juris Doctorate at the University of Oklahoma and on January 23, 1971 he married Janice Little Bird. Alan and Janice made their home in Weatherford. Alan served as assistant district attorney from February 1971 until 1976. From 1976 to 1980, Alan worked in private practice with Dale Jarvis. Alan was appointed Associate District Judge in August 1980 and ran unopposed in three subsequent elections. He retired in December 1998, after serving 18 years n the bench. Judge Markum will especially be remembered as an advocate for children. After retirement, Alan continued to work with a number of community organizations, serving on the board of directors of the Weatherford Opportunity Workshop and as Judge Advocate for the American Legion, Alan also enjoyed woodworking in his home workshop. Many of his creations were gifts, such as the oak podium he built for the Weatherford Public Library. Alan was a Deacon at the Church of Christ, a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, American Legion, Oklahoma Crime Commission, Oklahoma State Foster Care Review Board, and he also worked with Multi-County Youth Services in Clinton. Memorials may be made to the Pregnancy Care Center of the Weatherford Opportunity Workshop.
Alan is survived by his wife, Janice of the home; one son, Seth Markum and his wife, Valerie and grandson, Alan Grant of Weatherford; one daughter, Sara Markum of Tampa, Florida; two brothers, Neil Markum of Stateline Beach, Florida and Todd Markum and his wife, Nancy of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marie Markum.
