He was born in the York region of Toronto, Ontario, and met my great-grandmother, Louise Turner, in the Salvation Army.

Having begun there, they moved across the river to Buffalo in 1906, to start their new careers in volunteerism and charity with the Volunteers of America.

He was always a border at the VOA workingman's hotels as he worked apart from his wife. She was working in Denver when a gas pipe exploded in his room, killing him 22 days later, only a few short months after his first and only grandchild was born (my mother) in 1936.
