My grandfather served in the US Navy during WWI, and said that "the Navy was the only branch of the service to be in". At sometime while in the Navy, my grandfather was exposed to mustard gas, which burned the insides of his lungs.
He married my grandmother.
I know his stone says he was born in 1896, but he was really born in 1897. My grandmother was almost 2 years older then him, and it bothered her, so he became a year older.
