Rev. L. J. Sailor was the son of Dwight E. and Cora Bowen Sailor. In 1917 he married Bernice Bridgford of Joy, Illinois. He is the father of one son, Danton.

He was 1919 graduate of Hedding College at Abingdon, Illinois and completed his graduate work at Asbury Seminary and Garrett Bible Institute

He was employed as an Associate Director of the Wesley Foundation at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois and at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois. He founded the Chanute Foundation at the Chanute Field Air Force Base, Rantoul, Illinois.He was the Methodist Minister in El Paso, Illinois from 1954 to 1957 and at one an associate pastor of Wesley Methodist Church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Rotary Club.
