Synott Matthews, age 81, of Mangum, passed away Thursday morning, September 1, 2016, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.
Synott was born in Moore, Oklahoma on June 19, 1935 to Synott Nora Matthews and Elsie Marion (Yoachum) Matthews. He grew up in the Amarillo Plainview area of Texas and graduated with the class of 1954 from Plainview High School. After High School Synott was called to be youth minister at Grace Baptist Church in Amarillo, Texas. Later at Bel Air Baptist Church in El Paso and Hallmark Baptist Church in Fort Worth.
In 1958 he was drafted into the United States Army and served two years, receiving an honorable discharge. After his service to his country he attended West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Art Degree. Synott also received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from the University of Texas El Paso all along the way continuing his service as a youth minister.
On July 1, 1985 Synott married the love of his life Angie Varela in Clovis, New Mexico and they moved to Mangum, Oklahoma where he began his 26 year teaching career as Art Instructor at Mangum High School until his retirement in 2011. In Mangum he served as the youth director at Mangum First Baptist Church. Later the family moved their membership to Tabernacle Baptist Church in Altus where he served on staff and taught the Senior Saints Sunday School Class for 21 years. His faith in The Lord was always the cornerstone for Synott and his family with his life verse being Matthew 6:33... But seek ye first the kingdom of God… He touched many lives while at Mangum High School and was voted Teacher of the year twice by his peers. In 2010 Synott was selected as the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Oklahoma High School Teacher of the year. He was inducted into the Mangum Education Hall of Fame in 2015. During his teaching career his Art Students won many honors and awards ranging from local to national competitions. He was quoted as saying that Mangum Schools hired him to teach Art, but he also strived to teach duty and responsibility. Synott is an accomplished artist. In his spare time he painted Christian, Western and Patriotic Art. He also enjoyed visiting Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas panhandle, watching John Wayne and Roy Rogers and other western movies. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, Texas Longhorns and UTEP Miners. Synott never met a stranger, always had a smile, a story or a joke. Most importantly, Synott shared the Gospel of Christ with everyone he came in contact with. He was a man of Faith and he brought out the best in people and will be dearly missed.
Preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Donna Lee Matthews; Willa Dean Love; and Delores Wilson; Synott is survived by his wife of 31 years Angie Matthews of the home; one son, Ernie Synott Matthews of Mangum; two daughters, Stacy Quintana and husband Dean of Yukon, Oklahoma; and Cynthia Camacho and husband Jose of Oklahoma City; one brother, Marvin Matthews and wife Pat of Virginia; eleven grandchildren, Beth; Matthew and his wife Kayla, Kenny, Alex, Daniel, Marcy, Zaccaria, Derrick, Denisa, Brianna, and Emily; one great grandson, Jonathan; two brothers-in law, Elmer Love of Amarillo; and Gary Wilson of Washburn, Texas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, in Altus with Gregory A. Hawn officiating. Cremation will follow funeral services under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory of Altus.
