Asbury Fassett was named for one of the two first Methodist bishops in America. Asbury's father was a Methodist circuit rider.

Asbury was first married to Esther Elizabeth Welch (1814-1840). Their children were twins Elizabeth Flavilla and Frances, born in 1839.

His second wife was Fanny Wilcox (1827-1857), with whom he had a son, Samuel, born in 1855.

His third wife was Sarah M. Fonda (1827-1905). Together they had a son, William David, born in 1859.
