Walter A. Pokines was born March 13, 1919 in Hoosick Falls, New York, the son of Clement and Anna Zukauskas Pokines. He was educated in schools at Hoosick Falls. He married Meryle Minor in Hoquiam, Washington in 1943. He served in World War II, where he was permanently disabled. After the War he returned to Hoosick Falls with his wife. He was employed at the Wood Flong Corporation, Specialty Insulation Company, and the Flomatic Corporation. He later worked as a machinist for the Noble and Wood Machine Company until 1973. He was the president of the local union of International Association of Machinists. He then worked for the Reynolds Tool and Die Company until retiring in 1986.
His interests included fishing, hunting, fly tying, gardening and golf.
He and his wife had eight children, 5 boys, and 3 girls. He had 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
