Folk Figure. She was the first American woman to earn a steamboat master's license, which was issued to her in February 1884. A Harper's Weekly article about her achievement brought her national attention. Miller worked with her husband George, a steamboat pilot and builder, primarily on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers between Louisville and New Orleans. She was inducted into the American Merchant Marine Hall of Fame at Kings Point, New York, in 1993. In 1995 she was recognized by the Dubuque, Iowa-based National Rivers Hall of Fame.
