A memorial service will be held for Dr. Milton W. Anderson at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Unitarian Universalist Church, with the Rev. Dillman Sorrells officiating.

Dr. Anderson, 80, of 211 Second St. N.W., a consultant in the division of cardiovascular diseases and internal medicine at Mayo Clinic and professor of Medicine at Mayo Medical School, died Saturday (Aug. 17, 1996) at Charter House.

Born Dec. 30, 1915, in Denham, Minn., he graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1936. He was a teacher and coach at Wood Lake, Minn., High School for a year and taught science at Grove City, Minn., High School from 1937 to 1940 and also served as principal of the school. In 1943 he received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and later did graduate work at the university. He interned at Boston City Hospital in 1944, and was a fellow at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine from 1944 to 1948. On June 26, 1941, he married Charlotte Ann Miller in Minneapolis and they had resided in Rochester since 1944. From 1953 to 1955 he served in the Army Medical Corps, was stationed in Battle Creek, Mich., and Tacoma, Wash., and achieved the rank of captain.

In April 1948 he was appointed to the permanent staff at Mayo Clinic as a consultant in medicine and served as head of a section of medicine from 1962 to 1970. In 1948 he also was appointed to the faculty of Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, was professor of clinical medicine, MGSM, from 1970 to 1973, and then was professor of medicine at Mayo Medical School. He retired in 1983.

Dr. Anderson belonged to a number of organizations, including American and Minnesota medical associations, Minnesota College of Physicians, American College of Chest Physicians and its board of regents in 1966, Minnesota chapter of the American College of Chest Physicians, Minnesota Society for Study of the Heart and Circulation, and Minnesota Society for Internal Medicine and served on the executive committee from 1967 to 1969. He was a corporate member of the Minnestoa Heart Association, a member of the Intersociety Committee for Heart Disease Research and was on its advisory board in 1969, served on the Olmsted County Board of Health for several years beginning in 1969, was a former president of the Rochester Public Health Board, and was associate editor of ``Diseases of the Chest.''

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Dr. David of St. Paul, Daniel of Helena, Mont., Richard of Andover, Minn., M.W. ``Andy'' of Eagan, Minn., and Joel of Duluth, Minn.; one daughter, Mary L. Dahl of Parker, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Margaret Parsons of Delano, Minn., and Dorothy Anderson of Liberal, Kan. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

There will be no visitation or reviewal.

Memorials are preferred to First Unitarian Universalist Church or Channel One Food.
