Merritt was born 7th out of 10 known children to David and Lydia Pardee Treat. He was a tailor by trade. Built a general store in town (Torrington) and managed it, practicing his trade. He built the block his store was on. Built his house and a house for one of his daughters (Etta) whom never married.
He married Henrietta when he was 35 and they had three children together- Alice, Edward and Henrietta "Etta".
