John David Fitzgerald was born at Waukon, Iowa on March 16, 1867. His parents ere the late John and Mary Fitzgerald. The family moved to Pocahontas county when the deceased was still a young male. After he attended Buena Vista college at Storm Lake, he later graduated from the Capital City Commercial college at Des Moines and was for several years a teacher in the rural schools of this county.
On October 16, 1895 he was united in marriage with Anna C. Quinlan at Corpus Christi church, Fort Dodge. They established their home on a farm five miles northeast of Varina. Several years later Mr. Fitzgerald entered partnership with his brother, T. P. Fitzgerald and engaged in the livestock and implement business in Varina. He later purchased a farm at the edge of Varina and about 1917 the family moved there. Mrs. and Mrs. Fitzgerald have resided there since that time.
Mr. Fitzgerald enjoyed a wide acquaintance throughout Pocahontas county and adjoining counties. He was a gentleman of the highest standing, clean in character and honorable in all his business and other transactions. He was a close observer of county, state and national affairs and keenly interested in political matters, serving for a number of years as an official of the democratic party. He was a member of the board of directors of the form Iowa Trust and Savings Bank of Varina, a member of the Varina school board for a number of years, a member of the county board of supervisors and also served on the county old age pension board.
Mr. Fitzgerald is survived by his wife and six children. The children are J.V. Fitzgerald, Storm Lake; Mrs. Gene Cole, Emmetsburg; Mrs. Francis Kelly, Pocahontas; Earl Fitzgerald; Dr. J.D. Fitzgerald, Sloan; and Lucian Fitzgerald, Marcus. One son and a daughter died in infancy. Also surviving are one brother Thos. P. Fitzgerald, Fonda; and three sisters, Mrs. John Eichler, Pocahontas; Mrs. John Mackey, Fonda; and Miss Winnie Fitzgerald, Fort Dodge. There are twelve grandchildren.
