Elihu Griffin was the son of Reuben and Jane Griffin Griffin. Reuben was the son of Richard Griffin and his wife Nancy Clark, Jane was the daughter of William Griffin and wife Rachael Smith. Richard and William were sons of John Griffin and wife Margaret (Goode). He married Elizabeth Gary in 1819. Their children were John B., Abner Teague, Elihu Smith, Sarah and Alva. Siblings of Elihu's were Margaret "Peggy", Benjamin, Katherine "Katy", Martha "Patsy", Elizabeth "Betsy". Elihu has often been confused with another Elihu Holby Griffin who lived in the same area.

"DIED - Elihu Griffin, aged 77 years, died at his residence in this county, four miles south of this place on the Easley road, at 10 o'clock on last Thursday. His remains were interred in the burying ground at Liberty church on Friday following."
