Samuel was an officer in the 3rd Iowa Infantry (Co G) in the Civil War. He was severely wounded and taken prisoner in the dreadful charge at Jackson MS on July 12 1863.

Irwin, Samuel. ( Veteran) Age 25. Residence Doorville, nativity Ireland. Enlisted May 21, 1861. Mustered June 8, 1861. Promoted Second Sergeant Feb. 5, 1862; First Sergeant April 26, 1862; First Lieutenant April 3, 1863. Missing, taken prisoner July 12, 1863, Jackson, Miss. Mustered out March 3, 1865, expiration of term of service.
