Leonard Frederick Matthews, 86, of Tifton passed away Friday, August 19, 2016, at his residence. His funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at Salem Baptist Church in Tifton with the Rev. Andy Ring officiating. Mr. Matthews will be laid to rest at Salem Memorial Gardens in Tifton. The family will receive friends Saturday, August 20, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Mack McCaskill, Monty Spinks, Wayne Nash, Johnny Dunn, Randall Akins, Harmon Marchant, Ronnie Jones, Ernest Jones and Wright Marchant will serve as pallbearers. Born March 30, 1930 in Alapaha, Mr. Matthews was the son of the late Chester A. Matthews and Martha Ford Matthews. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Velma Loretta Sims Matthews, who died in 2014; four brothers; and one sister. He retired from the Tift County Road Department and was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Tifton. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and bulldozer work. He was also a veteran of the United States Army.
Mr. Matthews is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Brenda Matthews of Tifton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta “Rita” and Robert Petrizzo of Coolidge, Marty and Tony Estella of Omega, and Laurie and Tommy Nash of Tifton; eight grandchildren, Jessica Pritchard, Jeremy Nash, Nikki Estella, Andrew Estella, Cecilia Fallin, Jonathan Salpas, Katherine Salpas, and Brandy Holloway; and eleven great-grandchildren, Bryanna McInvale, Bryce Rhodes, Brody Rhodes, Jacob Estella, Brianna Pritchard, Chance Pritchard, Emma Pritchard, Micah Griffin, James Hinkley, Avery Fallin and Ariel McCleod.
