Margaret Lucille (Jensen) Roberts was born on a farm seven miles North of Corning to Albert F. and Myrtle Esther (Hoyt) Jensen on March 17, 1919 in Washington Township, Adams County, IA, the oldest of six children. Margaret attended the Ferris School #7 in Washington Township and graduated from Corning High School in 1936. After graduation, she taught in Adams County rural schools, including the French Colony Icarian School and attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls during the summers. In 1942, she received an elementary teacher’s certificate and taught one year in Eddyville Schools.
On June 7, 1943, she married Hylton Paul Roberts and to this union, nine children were born. They made their home on the farm north of Corning that had belonged to Margaret’s grandfather, J.P. Jensen. Two years later, they purchased the 160 acres from the J.P. Jensen Estate. Prior to their marriage, Margaret’s parents, brother and sisters had relocated to Arizona.
Margaret worked alongside Hylton on the farm raising various livestock and farm crops. Each year she planted and cared for a large garden in order to harvest and preserve foods to feed the entire family. In 1978, Hylton and Margaret incorporated the farm to include their three sons. The farm was recognized as a Century Family Farm in 1994.
Margaret was a faithful member of the Corning United Methodist Church, since joining the church at the age of 13, in 1933. She was a member of the UMW, serving every office and teaching many lessons. She was also a member of PEO Chapter CV, her neighborhood Friendship Club, and a 4-H leader for many years.
Margaret was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and loved to keep track of each one and their daily activities. She enjoyed reading, especially mystery stories; and needlepoint, such as embroidery, cross stitch and quilting. She loved to bake cookies, breads, and her specialty, pies, of all kinds. Margaret passed away at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston, IA on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at the age of 95.
She is survived by her daughters: Sharon (John) Spragle of Clear Lake, IA; Ilene (Mark) Hoffmann of Nevada, IA; Ann (Lyle) Shill of Nevada, IA; Jennifer (Dan) Jones of West Des Moines, IA; her sons: Jeffrey (Deb); Bernard (Dianne); and Burton (Michelle) all of Corning, IA; fifteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; her three sisters: Louise Brown of Phoenix, AZ; Alice Boyd of Scottsdale, AZ and Charlotte Mortensen of Pine, AZ; sister-in-law Jackie Woiwood of Dewey, AZ; former son-in-law, Delmar Chafa of Corning, IA; many nieces, nephews and friends.
