The son of John Henry & Eva Elizabeth (Rawls) Warner, in 1850 & 1870 he lived in Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, but he is not found in the 1860 census. Then a laborer by trade, he stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster March 10, 1865, as a private with Co. A, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865.

He married Edna Hester in 1871 and fathered Harman B. (b. 05/13/70), Clara Belle (b. 11/03/72 - married John H. Ensminger), Barbara H. (b. 01/??/79), John W. (b. 07/18/80), George H. (b. 09/06/85), and Ella (b. 02/??/89). In 1880, he lived in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, where he died from "acute gastritis" with an "abscess of upper lip" a contributing factor. One source has him marrying two different women named Edna, but that is unconfirmed.
