Alan Hiester died on Tuesday August 16, 2016. He was devoted to his family of four daughters and to his deep Catholic faith. He leaves with the appreciation of his daughters for being a good father.

He was born in Berkeley, CA on July 27, 1920 as the middle child to Cyrus and Anne Hiester. He graduated from UC Berkeley with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in May 1943. In July 1943, he entered the US Navy as an ensign. He received two months of officer training in New York, four months of pre-radar training at Bowdoin College in Maine and had four months electronic training at MIT in Boston. He spent two years at the ship repair base in Adak, Alaska.

After WWII, he went to work with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph in outside engineering in September 1947. He met Patricia Cavanagh while she was at UC Berkeley studying for a Master's degree as a Public Health Analyst. They were married at St. Leo's Church in San Jose, CA on October 7, 1950. After many different jobs and some promotions, Alan was transferred to Reno, NV in May 1964. As Engineering Manager, he was supposed to have that job for two to three years and move back to California. Luckily, for Alan and Patricia, he stayed in Reno until he retired in May 1982.

Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and his brother, Bud Hiester. He is survived by his daughters Mary Lou Carey of Fallon, NV; Katherine (Rich) Getto of Boise, ID; Carol (Mike) Amos of Fallon, NV; Joanne (Dan) Cohen of La Mesa, CA; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; as well as his sister Lois North of Seattle, WA.

Private services will be held at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Reno, NV. Arrangements were entrusted to O'Brien-Rogers & Crosby Funeral Home, Reno.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent's Organization through Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, PO Box 5099, Reno, NV 89513-5099.
