Philo Belden had several businesses. On the 26th of October, 1839, with Martin C. Whitmore, Levi Godfrey, Obed Hulburd and Hiland Hulburd, Belden platted all of the Rochester village property on the west side of the river and that portion on the east side south of Main street. In 1840 he built and operated a saw mill. With Jeremiah Ford, he established an iron foundry in connection with the saw mill and the grist mill producing the castings needed fort hem. After these enterprises he turned his attention to the building of the Fox River Valley railroad.
