Grange Master Herman Schell Dies At 61 Caring For Grange Grounds

Perhaps it was only right that Herman Schell, grange master of the Delhi Grange, should have died with a shovel in his hand, working on the Grange grounds that he loved so well.

Schell was 61 and friends said he had never suffered a heart attack before, but Friday, he was struck suddenly and never regained consciousness. The shovel was there at his side when they found him on the grange property.

He was master of the grange and had only recently helped to commemorate the organization with the official stamp which was published by the United States Post Office.

As a tribute to his service, the grange held a special burial ceremony in his honor day before yesterday in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Stevinson. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday, with the Rev. Charles Allen officiating.

Survivors included his wife, Rosie Schell of Delhi, three sons, Carl and Willis Schell, Delhi, and Richard Schell, San Jose, five daughters, Wilma Schell, Delhi, Colleen Groesbeck, Alameda, Rebecca Harry and Alice Chambliss, Sparks, Nev. and Anngean Hu of Los Banos, four brothers, Earl, Merle and Fred Schell, Delhi and Clyde Schell of Oregon; two sisters, Virgie McClure and Vina Houser, both of Turlock.
