A is for Apples
Written July 22, 2005

The memory I'm sharing with you today is one about my grandmother, Myntie Frances Wilborn Adwell. We lived with my paternal grandmother from the time I was born until the year I started to school. She took care of me while Mother and Dad worked at the grocery store and meat market.

My grandmother doted on me and in fact spoiled me rotten. But she was also, the one who taught me to read and write by the time I was four or five years old. She was also the one who taught me Bible stories that enabled me to answer questions that even some of the church elders couldn't answer.

One of the things that come to mind when I think of Grandmother is the way she would scrape apples for me. She would cut them in half and core them. Then using a spoon she would scrape the meat into the spoon until it was full of what amounted to apple sauce. I loved this and can remember her doing this until I was way past being big enough to eat the apple whole.

Scraping apples was just one of the loving, caring things my grandmother did for me and although it is such a small thing, it is one of the reasons I remember Grandmother with such sweet sorrow today.
