Obituary from The Tablet, 13 SEP 1919:

COLONEL FRANCIS BAYNHAM VAUGHAN.

We regret to announce the death of Colonel Francis Baynham Vaughan, which took place at Courtfield on Tuesday. Colonel Vaughan had been in failing health for some time, but recently had seemed much better. He was taken ill on Monday, and though at first no anxiety was felt, he grew rapidly worse, and I died quite peacefully on the following afternoon. Born in 1844, he was the fifth son of the late Colonel John Vaughan, of Courtfield. He succeeded to the family estates on the death of his father, and during the life-time of four elder brothers, who had become priests. He served for many years in the Royal Monmouthshire Engineers, and became their Colonel in 1890. He was a J.P. for the counties of Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, and a Deputy-Lieutenant for Herefordshire. He was a Papal Chamberlain to three successive Pontiffs, and was created a Knight Commander of Pius in 1910. He married Caroline, daughter of the late Charles Pope, of St. Louis, U.S.A., in 1871, and leaves three sons, two of whom are priests, and three daughters, of whom one is a Benedictine nun. Colonel Vaughan was a kind friend to many, and will be long and sincerely mourned in the neighbourhood, where he spent nearly all his life.—R.I.P.
