Death of a Might Hunter
Samuel Askey, a "mighty Nimrod", died recently in Snowshoe township, Centre county, Pa. The Bell donte Democrat says he was born in Franklin, Northunberland County, served under Gen. Harrison, and when the wars were ended, returned to his native place, and subsequently located in the wilds of Snowshoe county. He was one of the first two settlers that followed in the trails of the Indians, they having left but a short time previous, leaving their hunting grounds to be occupied by white men. The life of Mr. Askey as a pioneer and hunter would compare with that of Daniel Boone or Col. Crockett. Many of the most thrilling adventures with and hair-breadth escapes from the wild denizens of the forest have been heard from the lips of the deceased by the writer. He carried with him to the grave scars, the result of wounds received in several contests with panthers, in which his life depended on his presence of mind and the faithfulness of his dog. Much of his time was spent in hunting, which proved to be the most lucrative business in which he could engage in his new home. He killed, during the time he lived in Snowshoe, sixty panthers, ninety-eight wolves, (to the records of Centre county will bear testimony) about five hundred deer, and a large number of bears, the precise number could not be obtained, but in a statement given by himself to the writer, he sold in one season two thousand seven hundred weight of bears meat.

Samuel Askey died on the 28th day of May, 1857, at the residence of Hisson, in Snow Shoe, in the eighty-first year of his age, leaving 12 children, 42 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
