ACKLEY, ALLEN DAILY, farmer. Born, Elmer, N. J., November 30, 1884, son of John J. and Louisa (Fletchinger) Ackley.

The Ackley ancestry dates back to Revolutionary days, and includes such well known residents of Salem County as the Rev. Uriah Ackley and Josiah Ackley.

Allen D. Ackley's parents moved from the place at Elmer to the Deerfield farm when he was but an infant, and his education was obtained at the Deerfield public schools. When eighteen years of age, he left school to work on his father's farm. Two years later the father died, and for five years thereafter, the son operated the farm for his mother, afterward purchasing it for himself. He has been engaged in general farming ever since, operating about ninety acres, which are particularly well adapted for the growth of white potatoes, hay and grain, the first named being the principal crop. In connection with the farm there is a small dairy.

The marriage of Mr. Ackley and Bessie, daughter of Daniel D. and Anna (Evans) Hitcher, of Cohansey, occurred February 8, 1907. Their children are John J., born July 10, 1908; Lillian S., March 28, 1912, and Donald S., September 2, 1921.

Mr. Ackley was appointed a member of the Deerfield Township Board of Education in 1916, to fill an unexpired term, and has twice, since then, been elected to the office. He was chosen vice-president of the board in 1919, and president in 1920. When the township was divided in 1922, he was appointed president of the Upper Deerfield Township Board of Education for one year, the term expiring 11 February, 1923. He has always taken an active part in improving school conditions and in campaigns for new school appropriations.

He is a member of the Cumberland County Board of Agriculture; Deerfield Grange, No. 52, Patrons of Husbandry, and the Inter-State Milk Producers' Association. He also belongs to Deerfield Circle, No. 16, Brotherhood of America.

He is a Republican, and belongs to the Deerfield Presbyterian Church, which he served as a trustee for about ten years. He has been Sunday school superintendent since April, 1922. He finds recreation in hunting and fishing.

Residence and business address, Cohansey-Husted road, Deerfield.
