John P. Wankum, 62, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita. He was born Dec. 13, 1943, in Marcus, Iowa, to Urban T. and Clara Hansen Wankum. A resident of Garden City since 1977, moving from Omaha, Neb., Mr. Wankum had been a plant supervisor at the Cargill Molasses Terminal in Omaha and stayed with the company nearly 36 years before retiring. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City, was a National Guardsman, and enjoyed golfing, playing softball in his earlier years, and was dedicated to his family and his work. On Sept. 3, 1967, he married Linda L. Young in Red Oak, Iowa. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Phil Wankum of Manhattan; a daughter, Carla Wankum of Wichita; a sister, Jean Sohl of Cleveland, Texas; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, officiated by Lyle Stuehrenberg, pastor. A second service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak.
