Son of Adam Simpson, born 1852 in Indiana,and died Dec. 2, 1935; and Mary Emma Foster born 1862 in Bosworth, Missouri and died Nov. 8, 1938 in Petaluma, Calfornia.
Joseph married Mabel Eunice Cline on July 1, 1916, in Klamath Falls, Oregon. They had two sons; Walter Simpson Foster born in Huntington Beach, Calif. Dec. 29, 1919 and Warren Hathaway Foster born Oct. 18, 1920 in Klamath Falls.
Joseph was educated in Garcia, California and came to Oregon at age 16 and worked for his father at the Round Lake district raising cows, hogs, rye, wheat, and oats, and feeding his cattle. He cut firewood in the forests and sold it by the wagonload in Klamath Falls. At the age of 21 he took over the management of his father's place, continuing for 6 years. He then filed on what had been a relinquishment at Malin. Not knowing that this land had reverted to the Government, he found himself in the rather difficult poisition of losing everything he had put into the project, for a Mr. Baker had previously filed on the claim. After this experience, he started working in the woods contracting logs, for three years then bought a ranch in round Lake where he made his home for 6 years. In 9192 he went to Keno for five and half years and worked at falling timber for Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. He accepted a position as janitor of the Keno schools and in April 1938 was appointed Postmaster.
