Florence (Carr) Strong married Tom Calmes in San Francisco on April 30, 1923. In 1925 they and Florence's daughter Eulene Strong moved to Tule Lake where they farmed government leased land, near the Lava Beds. They also ran a hunting camp during the waterfowl season.
In 1934 they purchased the Nelson Ranch near Keno and moved there in 1935. They farmed, rasied hogs and cattle. Tom continued to work the ranch until shortly before his death.
Tom and Florence were the parents of Monniette and Barney Calmes.

Florence Sylvia Calmes, 92, who was known as "Grandma Calmes" died Monday in Keno.
She was born in San Francisco to Alfred and Ellen Carr.
She was in San Francsico during the 1906 earthquake, and because of it, was separated from her family for about a month in the care of the Salvation Army.
She was married to Tom Calmes in 1923 in San Francisco. They later moved to Tulelake to farm. In 1934, they moved to Keno.
Mrs. Calmes loved animals and to travel.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Barney and Daisy Calmes, Keno; daughter, Eulene McAuliffe, Klamath Falls, daughter and son-in-law, Monniette and Ed Gardner, Keno; sister, Beatrice Scott, South San Francisco, Calif.; grandchildren, Dan and Tom McAuliffe, Florence Greer, Ellen Boling, Patricia Nelson, Marilyn Icenbice and Muriel O'Conner, all Klamath Falls; Tom Zaronsinski, Paisley, Alvin Zarosinski and Douglas and Tom Calmes, and Kathy Greek, all Keno, Dave and Bill Hoskins, both Portland, and Sherry Emerson, Sandy; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Mabel Anderson and a brother, Sid Carr.
