In the Clymer Cemetery located in Union Township, Hancock County, Ohio stands a memorial stone honoring Charles Clymer and his youngest son Rev. Fountain N. Clymer. On this stone is engraved the following history.

“Charles Clymer was born in Md. St. moved to Del. St. with his parents. They moved to Bloom Twp. Fairfield Co. Ohio. His house was chosen for a preaching place in 1806 and fought for his country in 1812. They had 10 children. Rev. F.N.C. was the youngest. He departed this life in Putnam Co. Ohio Jan. 10, 1881 age 65 yrs. 6 mo. 3 ds. He was a member of Sandusky Conf. Brethren Church. He joined the church in 19th year of life and did the Master’s bidding until it was said it was enough, come up higher.”

From “The Clymer Clan of Maryland, Delaware and Points West", by Anita Ockert, pub 1987.

On another page of the book is a photocopy of a photograph of the headstone. It looks very much like the headstone posted to Susannah’s memorial page, wife of Fountain. I would assume that the headstone for Charles and for Fountain is next to or near Susannah’s if not in fact another side of the very same stone. Ockert wrote: “A close-up view of the memorial stone to Charles Fountain Clymer in the Clymer Cemetery in Hancock County, Ohio. He was buried in Fairfield County. This stone was probably erected by Ezra Harris Clymer, son of Fountain Clymer and grandson of Charles Fountain Clymer and gives valuable historic data.”

Although Fountain, his wife Susannah and their son Ezra died in Putnam County, Ohio, both Ezra and Susannah are buried in the Clymer Cemetery. There is no reason to believe that Fountain is buried anywhere other than Clymer Cemetery, and we do have an eyewitness account of someone who took a photograph of his headstone, however it is published and copyrighted. Will need a new photograph, and hopefully one that can be read.

Fountain and Susannah were married on 17 October 1835 in Fairfield County, Ohio. Even before they were married Fountain had acquired 40 acres in Union Township, Hancock County and held a land patent dated 7 May 1835. In the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census they are located in Union Township; by 1870 they had moved to Riley Township in Putnam County, Ohio where they are counted again in the 1880 census.

They were the parents of ten identified children: Joshua, Ezra Harris, Emeline, Eli, Angeline, Caroline, Rosanna, Arkinson, Nancy Jane and Silas Clymer.

Fountain's Will dated 4 January 1880 from Riley Township names his then surviving children: Ezra H. Clymer, Emeline Pennell, Angeline Crawfis, Caroline 'Callie' Van Buskirk, Roseanna J. McDougle, Nancy J. Wagner, Silas W. Clymer.

Joshua died in 1837 and Eli in 1844, as infants, both presumed buried in Clymer Cemetery, headstones not found to my knowledge. Arkinson died in 1877, headstone found.
