Cassius served during the Civil War with his older brother, Milton Bateham in the Union Army (B Company, 28th Infantry Regiment - Iowa) from January 5, 1863 to July 31, 1865. When he first enlisted at the age of 16 (though he claimed to be 18), he resided in Poweshiek County, Iowa. After the war he returned to Iowa, and in 1865, Cassius became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
On February 4, 1875, Cassius married Francis F. Zeller, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Zeller and Christena Beougher, Jasper County, Iowa. They had one son, Harvey Grant Bateham. The marriage ended in divorce, and their son was later adopted by his maternal grandfather.
In 1892 Cassius married Mary Ann Garrett, daughter of Benjamin Garrett and Emma Henrieta Milburn Garrett. They had two children, a daughter, Emma Callistia Bateham, and another child that died in infancy.
In the very early 1900's, Cassius and his family moved to Polk County, Missouri, where he worked as a farmer.
