John was listed as an invalid before his death in the 1891 Pension survey. His name was mis represented as being John I. A. Boyd but looking at the actual record revealed that what they said was an I was actually a written Q.
From The Daily Notes, Canonsburg, PA Fri., March 21, 1905 , p. 8 says the J. D. France was appointed burgess of W. Middletown to take the place of J.Q.A. Boyd, deceased.
