Sophie J. Janik, nee Goverinski, age 99, of Hammond, IN, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016. She is survived by her two daughters: Sharon (Jerry) Pawlus, and Diana (Stephen Jr.)Kovecsi; four grandchildren: Scott Pawlus, Erin Pawlus, Stephen III (Lindsey) Kovecsi, and Danielle (Tony) Myers; five great-grandchildren: Aubrey Myers, Sophia Kovecsi, Lucy Myers, Bryce Kovecsi, and Brynnley Myers; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her husband, Adalbert "Al" Janik; parents, Joseph and Stella Goverinski; sisters: Mary (late Alex) Zelasko, Helen (late John) Tobolski, Frances (late Stanley) Oakes, Caroline (late Tony) Vandolick, and Blanche Goverinski; brothers: John (late Clara) Goverinski, Stanley (late Roselie) Goverinski, and Walter (late Clare) Goverinski. Funeral Mass at St. Mary Church, 525 N. Broad St. Griffith, IN, with Rev. Theodore J. Mens officiating. Entombment at Holy Cross Mausoleum, Calumet City, IL. Sophie was a Hammond resident for the past 74 years. She enjoyed gardening in her yard with her beautiful flowers. Being home with her family was her greatest joy. She treasured her grandchildren. Most of all, she loved her "sweetie pies", her great- grandchildren, eating chocolate, and loving her ice cream was her favorite. She surrounded her life with the Blessed Mother, visiting many shrines and God helping her along the way. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and loved by many, who along with numerous friends will miss her greatly. Till we are together with you and God in paradise, "garbage" up on those goodies Grandma!
