Lt. Joseph Benes passed away on March 24, 1949 in LaPorte County, Indiana. He was born on July 4, 1869 in Chicago, Illinois. to John & Petrolina (Hlavacek) Benes.

Joseph received his education in public school system of Chicago. After his education he had a successful military career spanning at least eight years. He served in Company B, during which time he fulfilled the ranks of Private, Corporal, Sergeant, and First Sergeant. Joseph held the rank of First Sergeant during the time Company B was mustered in the US Service. At that time, Second Lieutenant Perry was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company A, Joseph was First Sergeant and was promoted to fill the vacancy in Company B. He received a promotion as Second Lieutenant on January 5 1899. Shortly after his promotion to Second Lieutenant, Joseph was detailed as regimental exchange officer.

As far as civilian life - Joe was a contracting mason by trade.
