Alvin J. Gerling, age 89, of Washington, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at Cedarcrest Manor. Alvin was born on November 24, 1926 to the late Julius and the late Ida (nee Pruessner) Gerling in New Haven. He proudly served in the US Army during WWII, and was united in marriage to Marian Pruessner on October 14, 1950 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in New Haven. Alvin was a railroad man for his entire career, first working as a station agent in Washington with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and then transferred to the corporate headquarters in St. Louis where he worked until he retired in 1985. Retirement didn’t mean taking it easy for Alvin though, he was passionate about his hobbies and interests, and dove into them all fully and with purpose. In the outdoors, he was an avid sportsman, fisherman, golfer, and gardener; he and Marian enjoyed dancing; and as a father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he was the best role model any could ask for.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 11 am at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Washington. Interment will be held at the Church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 from 4 until 7 pm at Miller Funeral Home. Memorial donations are appreciated to the St. Peter's UCC Atrium Fund (please make checks payable to the Church) or the Alzheimer’s Association.
