Doris Adams Raines Mitchell, 87, went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, August 6, 2016, at Rice Estate. Born in Union, SC, she was the daughter of the late Ernest E. and Ethel J. Adams. The middle child of seven siblings, she is survived by her brothers Ernest E. Adams, Jr. of Union, SC and William C. Adams of Spartanburg, SC. Doris is predeceased by three brothers: Ralph, Roger, Don; and one sister, Lee Lomas. She was a faithful, kind, and giving Christian.

While a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend - she always put God first. Spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great joy and satisfaction. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia in the Rebecca Naylor Sunday School class. She was very active with the International Program on Thursday mornings, serving as co-director and teacher. A member of the WMU, Doris had a lifelong interest in missions and a mission-minded heart. She had the gift of encouragement and often put it to good use by visiting the homebound church members. Along with her sweet spirit, Doris was known for her kind and loving nature. Her sunny disposition almost always had a smile for everyone, even up until the end.

She graduated from Union HS, then moved to Columbia to work and attend business school, where she met Albert, her first husband. She worked for the Employment Security Commission for 40 years, beginning at age 16!

Doris and Albert D. Raines, Sr. were happily married for over 30 years, until his untimely death in 1978. After the passage of several years, and through mutual friends, she met and married C. Stanley Mitchell. They traveled widely throughout the U.S. and abroad, enjoying over 14 years together. Her infectious love of travel took her to China, Israel, Romania, Europe, and the continental U.S., visiting many places twice.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Raines Padgett (Mike) of Blythewood and her son, Albert D. Raines, Jr. (Debbie) of Aiken. Doris has five grandchildren, Will T. Fowler, III (Mary Catherine) of Lexington; Ben T. Fowler (Jessica) of Greenville; Joshua A. Raines (Bethany) of Aiken; Russell A. Raines (Sarah) of West Columbia; and Sarah Beth Padgett of Columbia, along with five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Angela Mitchell DiGacomo, of Columbia, and her two children Jessica and Jason DiGacomo.

Visitation will be 5:00 7:00 Monday, August 8, 2016 at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd. Ext. The service for Mrs. Mitchell will be 11 o'clock, Tuesday, August 9 th , at First Baptist Church Boyce Chapel, 1306 Hampton St., Columbia, with Rev. Richard Humphries and Rev. William "Bill" Adams officiating. The burial will follow the service at Celestial Memorial Gardens, 311 Delree St., West Columbia. Pallbearers will be her four grandsons and two nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Rice Estate and Compassionate Care Hospice for all of their loving kindness to our Mother while in their care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon or Annie Armstrong offering in care of First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1000, Columbia, SC 29202-1000.
