Mary Marie McCarter, born February 22, 1922 to Pearlie Stinnett McCarter and William Harrison McCarter in the Sugarlands, Bullhead area of what is now part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2019.

In 1951 she married Ashley Charles McCarter (buried in Shiloh Cemetery). She had four children, Mary Annette, Dorothy Jean (Jim Siera), Daniel Charles (Betty) and Larry Richard.

Mary was proud of her American heritage, which started with Moses McCarter, who came to this country in the 1740's, as well as her Scotch-Irish and Gatlinburg heritage. She was a dedicated housewife and mother. She shared her love with her church as a lifelong member of Banner Baptist Church. She liked to sew, often making clothes for her family, friends and others she could help. She cooked (Good One) and canned not only for her family, but again, also to share with others. Her community service included being an active member in American Legion Post 202, church activities, helping with Garden Club projects and decorating military service men’s and women’s graves.

Family and friend will meet 2 PM Saturday, September 7 in Shiloh Cemetery for graveside service and interment.
