***SPECIAL NOTICE: A. E. JONES is eligible for a military headstone, to be provided by the Veterans Administration. I (John Mallory Land, Contributor #46870015) have all the documentation needed to apply for the grave marker, except that the VA requires authorization by a relative (they don't care how distant or indirect). If you have any connection to this person or know of someone who does, please contact me via my message board by clicking on my name below where it says "Created by:" or by emailing me at [email protected]. The VA will pay for the manufacture and shipment of the headstone, and volunteers will place it on the grave—there is no cost to the applicant or the family. Thank you.

Reported age at time of death was 77 years, so evidently born about 1837. Evidently the Allen E. JONES who married 25 JUN 1857 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, to Mary A. POWER. The death certificate for James E. JONES (1862-1925), who is buried in the same lot with A. E. & Mary, shows he was born in Alabama, the son of A. E. JONES (born in Georgia) & Mary POWERS (born in Alabama).

The 1900 census of Ward 8, Militia District #772 (Nances, a.k.a. McCrary, District), Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, shows: A. E. JONES (born Jan. 1837 in Georgia, both parents born in NC, a blacksmith) with wife Mary (Jan. 1843 AL GA GA), who had borne 11 children, 10 of whom were still living; they had been married 43 years. Children: Nannie (Feb. 1878 AL, a music teacher), Oscar (Mar. 1880 AL, presser), Harman (July 1883 GA, presser), Eugenia BUCHANAN (Dec 1859 AL, a widow employed as a seamstress who had borne 3 children, 2 living and present in the household: Albert Oct. 1887 GA, and Olin Mar 1889 GA), plus a boarder Josie WADKINS (Apr. 1872 GA) and a Black servant Josie BERT (Mary 1840 VA, a widow who had borne 15 children, 8 of them living). Also in this dwelling, but in a separate household is a servant family named GRANBURRY and a boarder named HENRY.

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons interred in the New Cemetery area of Linwood shows: A. E. JONES, widowed male, born in Alabama, died aged 77 years at 1124 Twenty-second street [Columbus, Georgia] of heart trouble; buried 29 JUN 1914 in Section 1, Lot 125, by undertaker HERRING, reference local death certificate #448- Sexton Emory JEFFERSON.

This grave is probably not identifiably marked. Also reported to be buried in Section 1, Lot 125 are: J. J. McKENDREE (buried 24 OCT 1881, aged 74 years); Jas. McCaskell JONES (buried 23 NOV 1899, aged 10 months); Mary E. JONES (buried 05 OCT 1900, aged 58 years); Jas. E. JONES (buried 16 AUG 1925, aged 63 years); Mrs. Virginia WALL (buried 06 DEC 1939, aged 77 years); and James Albert JONES (buried 08 DEC 1951, aged 65 years. None of these seem to be identifiably marked. Note that Helen (SWIFT) PEASE (buried 05 FEB 1926) and Mrs. Leah H. PEASE (buried 15 JUN 1926) are reported in Section 1, Lot 125 1/2, and in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book, these two appear in her Section B, Lot 98.
