Hazel Whitener Pierce, 64, of 942 Fifteenth St., SE, died Monday at a Hickory hospital after an unexpected illness.
Born Jan. 23, 1921, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late John Claude Whitener and Jacksie Bobbit Whitener.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Beth Pierce; and a brother, John C. Whitener Jr.
Survivors include her husband, James A. "Pete" Pierce; a brother, Bill Whitener of Hickory; and a sister, Hilda Bogle of Hickory.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at West Hickory Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
