Susanna was born in Volhynia, Poland (formerly Russia now Ukraine). She came to America in 1875 with family and other Mennonites on the S.S. Kennilsworth ship to Philadelphia PA. She married Jacob J. Base in Russia and they had five known children. They settled in Barton Co. KS. According to the Bergthal Mennonite Church records, they were members of the Dundee and Pawnee Rock congregation. After Jacob's death in 1898, Susanna remarried Pete Decker. They moved to Hamilton Co., KS near Syracuse. Susanna was a midwife for many years in her community.
Susie had a brother named Gus Ratzlaff and sister Anna who married Albrecht.
She was buried in a cemetery 10 miles south and two miles east of Syracuse. This is a place holder memorial.
