WWII Army Veteran

Carmelo Joseph Abbata, age 87, of North Tonawanda, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at the Erie County Medical Center after a brief illness. Born February 25, 1919 in Dunkirk, he was the son of the late Nicolo and Antonina (nee Tripoli) Abbate and had been a resident of Buffalo for the greater part of his life, and then Port Charlotte, Florida, before returning to North Tonawanda several years ago. An Army Veteran of WWII, he had worked at John E. Smith & Son Company in Buffalo, before retiring. Mr. Abbata was a member of the American Legion, the 40 and 8, the Tonawanda Moose Lodge No. 2163, and F.O.E., Aerie No. 1411 in North Tonawanda. He was the husband of the late Gloria (nee Schiffmaker) Abbata, who died August 14, 2002, and brother of the late Max, Robert and Joseph Abbate, and Angie Serinne.

He is survived by three children, Sandra Demler (Sherry Desimone), Melanie (the late Darwin) Horton and Nicholas (Michele) Abbata; six grandchildren, Denise (Ron) Walker, Christine Jones, Donna Brunn, Darwin Horton, Jeremy (Sandra) Abbata, and Nicole Abbata; a sister, Mary Floramo; a brother, Andre (Murielle) Abbatte; and two sisters-in-law, Helen and Sally Abbate. Also surviving are 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 3-7 PM today (Monday) only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where services will be held at 7 PM tonight. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Niagara Falls.
