Comer M. Alden, Jr., was born September 29, 1932, in Kingsville, Texas, the only child of Comer M. Alden and Elizabeth Bratton. He died peacefully on April 17, 2015. He was greatly loved, and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Comer graduated from Brownsville High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas; and a Masters of Sacred Theology degree from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. Comer was Pastor of Wesley Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas (1958 – 1961); Minister of Youth, Catalina Methodist Church, Tucson, Arizona (1961 – 1964); Pastor of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Tucson, Arizona (1964 – 1970); and Director of Leadership Education for Civitan International in Birmingham, Alabama (1970 – 1972).
Comer met and married his beloved wife Barbara in 1971 in Birmingham, Alabama and then moved to San Antonio in 1972. He became Vice President of the San Antonio College of Medical and Dental Assistants and later purchased the school and added additional campuses in McAllen, El Paso and Austin, Texas. Comer sold the schools and retired in 1996.
He also served as President of the Tucson Council of Churches; Tucson Ecumenical Council; Pima County Mental Health Association; Awareness House of Drug Abuse Persons, in Tucson; and Founder and President of Freedom House in Birmingham, Alabama. He was active in the United Way of San Antonio, and served as weekly chaplain to the emergency room at Bexar County Hospital.
After he retired, he devoted himself to the Lord’s work, and recently served as an assistant Pastor at Christ Our King Anglican Church in New Braunfels, ministering to seniors and teaching Bible classes.
Comer and his first wife, Carol, had two beloved sons, Steve and Andy Alden. He was blessed when he met his second wife and love of his life, Barbara Burgher, while they were both volunteering for the Crisis Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Being a man of great courage, Comer adopted Barbara’s four young children: Robby, Betty, Barbara and Danal. On April 11th, they celebrated 44 of years of love, devotion and marriage. For 44 wonderful years they worshipped the Lord together, giving their time and resources to charities, and traveling the world. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara; son Robby of Austin, his wife Kate and his children Jonathan, Nick and Lindsay; son Steve of Live Oak and his daughters Chelsea and Harley; daughter Betty of San Antonio and her children David, Robbie and Dani’; son Andy from San Antonio and his sons Brucks, wife Esther and their child Evelyn Whitney, and Cameron; daughter Barbara Digby of San Antonio, her husband Darin and their children Sarah and Will; son Danal of San Marcos.
In every part of his life – as parent, pastor, school owner, and in retirement – Comer followed the Lord’s commandments – to love God, and to love others. Well done good and faithful servant!
