Writer and diplomat. A graduate of Yale College (Class of 1841), he had a particular interest in agriculture and landscape design. He first went with the US consul to England in 1844 and later served as U.S. consul at Venice, Italy, (1853-1854). He wrote several books on travel and rural themes. His best known works were sentimental essays entitled Reveries of a Bachelor (1850) and Dream Life (1851), both written under the psuedonym "Ik Marvel".
