2009 obituary. SCARBOROUGH -- Robert T. Hayden Sr., formerly of South Portland, died Sept. 1, 2009, at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough after several years of declining health. Bob was born at home in South Portland on June 25, 1927, to Daniel J. and Margaret Donahue Hayden and grew up on Munjoy Hill and Peaks Island. He attended North School at the foot of 'the hill' and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1946. Immediately following high school he served in the U.S. Army in Kyoto, Japan, achieving the rank of Sergeant. After his honorable discharge, he attained a B.S. Degree from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., in 1952. It was during his college years that he met his future wife, a resident of Fairfield and the sister of a classmate. On Oct. 2, 1954, he married Beverly-Ann Bergere at Saint Thomas' Church in Fairfield. The couple spent the first years of their marriage in Connecticut. Returning to Maine, he started the Hayden Agency in 1956, selling insurance and later expanding his business into real estate sales, rehabilitation and development. One of the more visible projects he was involved in developing included the Munjoy South Townhouses. The Hayden Agency began on Exchange Street, and stayed there, one of only a handful of businesses that remained at that location before, during and after revitalization of the Old Port area. For over 40 years Bob was well known up and down the street. Friendships were made and deals brokered over cups of coffee at Tommy's. Bob was a long time high school referee. When football season ended he coached women's basketball at Central Maine Junior College. In his late 60s he returned to school, earning an MBA from Pierce University. As a child he was a parishioner of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and later became a communicant of Holy Cross in South Portland and St. Gregory's in Gray. His wife, Beverly, died on Jan. 26, 1976. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Sister Ruth Hayden, R.S.M. and Helen Hayden Joyce, a brother, Peter Hayden; a special aunt, Ruth Hayden; and a son-in-law, Peter McKenney. Family and friends are invited to attend a 10 a.m. memorial Mass of Christian Burial on October 10, 2009, at the Cheverus Chapel, Cheverus High School, 267 Ocean Ave., Portland. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.ctcrawford.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's name may be made to: The Beverly Hayden Scholarship Cheverus High School 267 Ocean Ave. Portland, Maine 04103.
