Elijah was the eldest child of Joshua H W Pumphrey. He was married twice and had four children. His first wife was Angeline Ducate whom he married on 29 Apr 1877 in Buchanan Co., Missouri. They had three children, Flora Belle, Lillian Mae, and a baby who was born and died the same day and was the cause of Angeline’s death during childbirth. Elijah remained a widower for 5 years and then married Minnie Gertrude Lacy on 2 Apr 1889 in Doniphan Co., Kansas. They had a daughter, Stella Josephine who was born on 13 Mar 1890 in the town of Severance in Doniphan County. Just four months after Stella’s birth, Elijah hitched a ride on a freight train in St. Joseph with the intent of disembarking in Severance where his wife and daughter were visiting her parents. This was to celebrate the July 4th holiday weekend. After traveling about 10 miles, Elijah fell between two railroad cars and was killed instantly. His remains were discovered the next day and were sent to St. Joseph and then to Camden Point in Platte Co., Missouri for burial. There is no marker for his gravesite.
