Professor of History at Morehead State University, 1948-1971. Exelbirt was born in Tarnopol, now in Ukraine, but formerly in the province of Lvov in Poland. At the time he was born in 1901, Tarnopol was part of Austria-Hungary. In his youth, his family relocated to Vienna, where he was educated and where he taught Slavic history. Exelbirt and his wife left Austria after the Anschluss in 1938, when Austria came under Nazi rule. After spending time in France and England, Exelbirt and his wife came to the United States, and after World War II, they made their way to what was then called Morehead State Teachers College, where he was employed as a history professor. When the institution's Distinguished Faculty Award was created in 1964 to honor excellence in teaching and research, no one was surprised when Exelbirt was the first recipient. His mastery of his discipline, his passion for sharing his knowledge, and his good humor set a standard that drew the admiration of colleagues and students alike. Many of his former students became distinguished teachers in their own right. In 1990, he received the Morehead State University Founders Day Award for University Service. A seminar room in Rader Hall was named in his honor, and a distinguished lectureship also bearing his name was established through the MSU Foundation.
