Ernie joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and pursued a career as a professional soldier eventually retiring as a Staff Sargent due to the fact that he became 100% disabled. Ernie was one of the highest decorated soldiers as a result of 3 tours in Vietnam. He distinguist himself as a Marine, a Halo Paratrooper, Gunner on Huey Helicopters, Ranger and Marine Corps Advisor. Many times while flying rescue missions he would shed his own bullet proof vest i n order to protect fallen comrades, quoting Ernie he often said "once a marine, always a marine", some of his numerous decorations were The Bronze Star, 4 Purple Hearts, Air Medal, Commendation Medal with V for Valor, Marine Corps Medal of Valor, The Distinguished Flying Cross and the Croiz De Guerra.

He married on 27 May 1972, Vegas to Coralie Cobai.
