HICKORY - Evelyn Kent Hamilton Turnmyre passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 following a period of declining health. Evelyn was born Oct. 23, 1928 in York County, S.C., to the late Druey Rabb and Pearl Powell Hamilton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bob Turnmyre; sister, Betty Louise Hamilton; brother, Druey Robert Hamilton; and a brother-in-law, Jimmie R. Reinhardt. She was a member of Viewmont Baptist Church. Evelyn enjoyed reading, quilting and big family gatherings and was a Bronze Life Master in American Contract Bridge. She is survived by a daughter, Tamara Verbiest and husband, John of Hickory; sons, Kenneth Turnmyre and wife, Donna of Hickory and John A. Turnmyre of Hickory; sisters, Helen H. Reinhardt of Hickory, Penny H. Gupton and husband, Mark of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and Linda H. Barger and husband, Ed of Cornelius; grandsons, Michael Turnmyre and wife, Nicole of Hickory, Jake Verbiest of Atlanta, Ga., and Will Verbiest of Raleigh; granddaughter, Anne Turnmyre Moser and husband, C. E. Moser, lll of Hickory; great-granddaughters, Mady and Katy Turnmyre of Hickory; great-grandsons, Luke Moser of Atlanta and Dylan and Mason Moser of Hickory. A celebration of life will be held Friday, May 8, at 3 p.m. at Viewmont Baptist Church with Dr. Jay Robison officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday, from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. at Viewmont Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Michael Turnmyre, Trey Moser, Jake Verbiest, Will Verbiest, Ed Barger and Robert Lockaby. The Turnmyre family would like to extend a special thanks to the employees of Brookdale Falling Creek (Sterling House) and to the Northwest North Carolina American Contract Bridge League Unit 244, directed by Dr. Eldon Clayman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends of North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 1841 Capital Blvd., Raleigh, NC 27635.
