Lon graduated from Columbus High School in 1953, then went on to earn his B.S. in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech in 1957. After participating in his college's ROTC program, he went on to serve in the United States Army from 1957 to 1963 where he earned the rank of Captain. He was stationed in Izmir, Turkey where he was tasked with the management of all NATO transportation activities. After his military career, he returned to Columbus, GA to work with his father in the family business, Alexander Contracting Co., Inc. and continued to be actively involved in the day to day operations until April 2016. During this time he also made time to serve on the Board of Directors for the Columbus Country Club and SunTrust Bank. Lon was also a long standing member of the Columbus Downtown Rotary Club, Columbus Home Builders Association, and First Baptist Church.
