L.D. Childs, 73, 80 Eucalyptus Drive, Westbrook Heights Addition, a retired Warner Gear official, died Monday in Fountainview Place after an illness of three months.

Mr. Childs was born in Farville, Ind., and moved to Cammack as a young boy with his parents, O.M. and Juinetta Ruth Morris Childs. The family moved to Matthews in 1916, where he graduated from Matthews High School in 1927. He later attended Ball State University.

He became associated with Warner Gear in 1928, where he worked for 41 years, retiring in 1969 as assistant superintendent of the Kilgore Avenue plant. He was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge 245, Greensboro Lodge 175, F&AM, and Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis.

Survivors include his wife, Winifred Stahl Childs; one daughter, Mary Jo Garling; four brothers, Charles, Herman, Morris, and Robert Childs; two sisters, Illon Freese and Elizabeth Losh; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Meeks Mortuary, with Dr. Marvin Grooms, pastor of Riverside United Methodist Church, officiating. Entombment will follow in Elm Ridge Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the mortuary 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday or immediately before services Thursday. Richman Funeral Home in Yorktown is in charge of funeral arrangements.
